These are dire times (and certainly dire straits). It is not the relatively free country of 1988 or even 1998, and the stakes are much higher than they were even in 2008 or 2018.

O’Rourke’s 1991 landmark book Parliament of Whores: A Lone Humorist Attempts to Explain the Entire U.S. Government, Andrew Ferguson wrote that when nothing changes, as we know from the second law of thermodynamics, everything gets worse.
My entire lifetime (and I am no longer “young”) is a constant series of nothing changing and everything getting worse, culturally and politically.
