The Ever-Shifting Overton Window
Will Modish Praise of Freedom, Particularly Economic Freedom, Last?
The incomparable El Gato Malo, expert and nonpareil covid commentator whose subjects also include politics and economics, recently wrote about the Overton window. The Overton window is the spectrum of ideas and policies acceptable to the general public at any one time. Recently, Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has reportedly been moving in a pro-liberty direction. He certainly expressed some regret at his platform acquiescing to the previous administration’s tyrannous (and histrionic) censorship demands. Also, as my friend and mentor Scott Holleran also noted, Jeff Bezos, Amazon founder, has announced that the publication he owns, the Washington Post, will now have a “libertarian”, pro-free-market editorial page. I highly recommend both Substack pages (especially Scott’s), and both are skeptical of at least one of the aforementioned moguls, with El Gato dubious of Zuckerberg in particular and Scott continuing his ongoing scrutiny and skepticism of Bezos.
